Skagit Young Professionals is on fire this fall - literally!  Join us at the hottest spot in town where we’ll set some things aflame, network a bit and kick the year off with a bang.  It all starts at 6:00 p.m. September 2nd at Sakura in Burlington.

Probably best to keep the flammables at home for this one…

The September event is sponsored by Business Bank, your local partner with a local commitment.  Everyone is talking about the national banks these days, what’s going on locally?  Whats the deal with community banks anyway?  Come find out what the buzz is about, and enjoy some tasty treats while you’re there!

Be sure to RSVP here.  Then, you’ll be entered into a fancy drawing, exclusive for RSVPers.  And if 50 of our attendees have RSVP’d, Jeremy McCullough will eat a sea urchin…

Need directions?  Business Bank is located at 1854 S Burlington Blvd. in Burlington.  Park in front of the bank and wander next door to Sakura.  $5 for chamber members, $10 for non-members.  See you there!

Hike to Sauk Mountain, August 9
July 28th, 2008 ~ by Amelia Cook

Join SYP for a hike up Sauk Mountain for incredible vistas of the Skagit River Valley!  We will meet at Business Bank in Burlington at 10 am on Saturday, August 9, and carpool to the base of Sauk Mountain.  The hike is 2.1 miles to the top, where we’ll picnic, take photos, and enjoy the lovely Skagit weather.  For more information, check out the official site.

Here are directions, in case you want to meet us there around 11:

From the Highway 20 Exit, go 40 miles east on Highway 20.  Turn left onto Forest Road 1030 (aka the Sauk Mountain Road) just before Rockport.  Follow this gravel road 8 miles to the trailhead parking lot.

We should reach the summit by 12:30 and be back in Burlington around 2:30.  Be sure to pack a lunch and plenty of water!

Summer Fun with SYP
June 16th, 2008 ~ by Amelia Cook

In the interest of giving everyone a well-deserved break to enjoy the (liquid) sunshine of summer in Skagit County, SYP will be holding some more casual events and outings for the next couple of months.

Have you ever been to the Skagit Speedway in Alger?  Don’t you just love it?  If you haven’t seen the sprint cars zip around the tracks, dirt and mud clumps flying at the crowd, you’ll have your chance, FOR FREE, on Saturday, July 12.  Join SYP and all of the Skagit County Chambers of Commerce for Chamber Night at the Skagit Speedway.  Steve Beitler, owner and manager of Skagit Speedway, has generously donated two tickets to Chamber Night to every SYP member!  Just show up to the races around 6:30 on Saturday, July 12 and check in where you see the chamber table.

Want to play softball?  Kyle Wright and Tony Cook of Williams & Nulle will be putting together a co-ed softball team for the Indian Summer League in late July.  No skills necessary, just come have fun!  Contact Kyle at krw@wncpa.com to get on the roster.

There will be two great events in August!  The Snohomish County Young Professionals Network has invited the Skagit Young Professionals to a barbecue on August 7, from 5 pm until 8 pm, at Forest Park in Everett!  This is a great opportunity to network with our neighbors to the south.  Also, Jeremy McCullough will be organizing a hike up Sauk Mountain in mid-August.  Details TBD.

We hope you have a wonderful summer!  Keep checking back for more details on upcoming events.

Gentlemen Gene’s was a Blast!

Over $300 in prizes, pool and darts tournaments, great food, and awesome people– SYP’s event on June 3 at Gentlemen Gene’s, sponsored by Skagit Valley Signs, was a blast!  Did you see Jeremy McCullough and David Wolfson finally take down the dynamic duo of Darrell Hooper and Jesse Eberle at pool?  What about Kris Vander Koos’ cleanup at the darts game?  Did you hear about the great deals being offered by Skagit Valley Signs?  For as many people who participated in the games, that many more hung out and got to know each other… truly making this one of the most lively and exciting SYP events so far.

If you have yet to make it to an SYP event, or if you haven’t been to one in awhile, don’t miss out again!  The Skagit Young Professionals are a great way to meet new people, develop business and personal relationships, let off a little steam, and keep in touch with what’s happening in the community.

On July 12, join us for Chamber Night at the Skagit Speedway.  Steve Beitler has generously offered two tickets for every employee of every member of every Skagit County Chamber for this great summer pastime!  Then, in August, SYP will plan a hike up Sauk Mountain.  This easy day-hike will be great fun, and we’ll try to find a Saturday that’s not raining!  Finally, we will resume regular monthly events in September… stay tuned to see what great plans we have in store!  I’m seeing a poker tournament on the horizon…

Networking Mistake: Labeling Yourself
May 19th, 2008 ~ by Jeremy McCullough

When networking, one of your goals should be to invite the people you meet into a conversation. But when you answer the question “What do you do?” with, “I am a _______,” the result is the exact opposite. Instead, you’ve got to start out with something interesting. Something that will pique your listener’s curiosity and make him/her want to talk to you longer.

Take lawyers, for example. When I hear them say “I’m a lawyer” in response to “What do you do?” it makes my eyes glaze over. I want to hear what type of law they practice and what kind of clients they work with. If they say something like “I practice entertainment law and I draft contracts between film production companies and movie stars,” that gets my attention and makes me curious to know more.Let’s say you’re a writer. Instead of saying “I’m a writer,” why not take advantage of the opportunity to mention the kind of writing you do and who you do it for? You could say, “I work with financial newsletter companies and I help them sell more subscriptions.” Or, “I write articles for online political magazines.” Or, “I work with aviation companies on their marketing materials.” All of these sentences give your listener so much more to ask about. Then you’re off and running into conversation-land!
