The Skagit Young Professionals & the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce Ambassador Committee are proud to announce that we have joined forces in support of the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation’s 2008 Festival of Trees. This project was a lot of fun last year, and we hope that with your involvement, we can raise even more money for the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation this year.
Our design team has established a goal to raise $4500+ and with your help, we can reach this goal and together we can support out community and this very worthy campaign.
This is the 20th anniversary of the Foundation’s largest event. Since its inception, 19 Festivals have raised over $2.2 million to benefit services and programs at Skagit Valley Hospital Regional Cancer Care Center.
Our theme this year is “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” and the tree will feature Marilyn Monroe memorabilia, the color pink, diamonds, and some great gift packages and luxurious getaways. These gift packages generally become the highlight of the auction. Your generous donation of a gift item or cash donation would go a long way towards creating an appealing gift package for the tree our group is designing. In return for your donation, your business will be featured as one of our generous donors for the Festival of Trees.
Please consider this request for a gift item &/or cash donation for the auction. All donations are tax deductible. Tax id #501 © 94-3078550. If you would like more information about the event, please contact the chamber office at 360-428-8547 or email kristenw@mountvernonchamber.com

Volunteers are needed to help with Skagit Community Action’s Financial Literacy Campaign and with Junior Achievement in kindergarten-sixth grade classrooms. Do you have time and energy to help others learn?
Community Action’s Financial Literacy program offers free classes and workshops to low income individuals and families aimed at providing the skills and knowledge necessary for financial independence. Sophia Richards, the VISTA volunteer at Community Action, is looking for volunteers to teach classes. You can contact her at SophiaR@skagitcap.org.
Also, Alissa Hallet-McSharry, the program coordinator with Junior Achievement, is looking for volunteers to teach Junior Achievement’s program in local schools. It involves a commitment of 45 minutes per week for five weeks to go into a classroom and teach fun “real world” subjects to kids grades kindergarten through 6. If you are interested, please email her at Alissah@jawashington.org.

A hardy troupe of dedicated decorators madly created the Skagit Young Professionals’ entry into the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation’s Festival of Trees this past weekend. The tree will be auctioned off this Friday, and the proceeds will benefit the Skagit Valley Hospital Cancer Care Center. Oh, and did I mention that the tree we designed is THE BEST CHRISTMAS TREE EVER? Because it is.

Please note that this tree, in all its majesty, contains too many presents to fit into the confines of a photograph. It is mighty, with RC cars, two (two!) bicycles, board games, a Nintendo Wii, sports equipment, toys, arts & crafts supplies, a handpainted toybox and children’s rocker, a telescope, an electric train, trips to attractions such as the Experience Music Project, the Future of Flight Museum, Deception Pass Tours, and much more…
We worked hard, and it has paid off. Kids would walk by during the decorating and say, “Wow! I want that tree!” We are confident that the tree will auction for several thousand dollars, all of which will go to provide the Cancer Care Center with new equipment. As an added bonus, local folks, SYPs, and local businesses were so generous that we ended up with nearly $500 cash money extra! We will donate this directly to the Cancer Care Center through the Foundation’s Fund a Need program. Hooray for SYP!

But wait! There’s more! Jamie McCullough also put in great effort to create the SYP mini-tree to be auctioned off as well! This tree includes a Build-A-Bear gift certificate and many fuzzy teddy bears to make someone smile. It is gorgeous, and Jamie did a wonderful job!

The Festival of Trees has been a great way for SYP to give back to the community in a fun, involved way. If you have a chance to stop by St. Joseph’s Center on November 24 or 25 for the Public Days, check out our awesome work!

Thank you to everyone who helped or donated (and thanks, Bill, for the photos!).

Forever Young

No, not the ever-popular Alphaville song, or even the more popular Rod Stewart song, and finally, not even the movie starring Mel Gibson as a frozen octegenarian:

but rather the theme of our SYP tree for the Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation’s Festival of Trees. How’s that for an awesome theme? The idea is that all the toys and items on the tree will be things that both kids and adults who are young at heart will enjoy. Here is a brief list of the many things we will be getting for our tree:
Nintendo Wii
Telescope
Tickets to the Sonics
Sports gear (baseball, basketball, football– you name it!)
Train set
Board Games
Remote Control Cars
Arts/Crafts Supplies
Books
And more!
If you would like to donate any of these items, or other items that kids and adults would love to have, contact Amelia at ameliac@mountvernonchamber.com. Spread holiday cheer and help support the cancer center at the Skagit Valley Hospital!
