Summer Fun with SYP
Monday, June 16th, 2008

In the interest of giving everyone a well-deserved break to enjoy the (liquid) sunshine of summer in Skagit County, SYP will be holding some more casual events and outings for the next couple of months.

Have you ever been to the Skagit Speedway in Alger?  Don’t you just love it?  If you haven’t seen the sprint cars zip around the tracks, dirt and mud clumps flying at the crowd, you’ll have your chance, FOR FREE, on Saturday, July 12.  Join SYP and all of the Skagit County Chambers of Commerce for Chamber Night at the Skagit Speedway.  Steve Beitler, owner and manager of Skagit Speedway, has generously donated two tickets to Chamber Night to every SYP member!  Just show up to the races around 6:30 on Saturday, July 12 and check in where you see the chamber table.

Want to play softball?  Kyle Wright and Tony Cook of Williams & Nulle will be putting together a co-ed softball team for the Indian Summer League in late July.  No skills necessary, just come have fun!  Contact Kyle at krw@wncpa.com to get on the roster.

There will be two great events in August!  The Snohomish County Young Professionals Network has invited the Skagit Young Professionals to a barbecue on August 7, from 5 pm until 8 pm, at Forest Park in Everett!  This is a great opportunity to network with our neighbors to the south.  Also, Jeremy McCullough will be organizing a hike up Sauk Mountain in mid-August.  Details TBD.

We hope you have a wonderful summer!  Keep checking back for more details on upcoming events.

The Whatcom Young Professionals Have Challenged Us to Paintball!
Monday, October 22nd, 2007

Get your goggles on and get ready to paintball!  The Whatcom Young Professionals have reserved the Skagit Valley Paintball field at 2464 E Blackburn Rd in Mount Vernon (right in our home territory!) and have challenged us to a battle of paint.  Who will step up?  Will you be the one to show them that the SYPs can handle their paintball guns?  The showdown begins on Monday, November 6, at 6 pm.  No need to RSVP, just grab your friends and go!

Cost is $50, all inclusive.  This means unlimited play time, unlimited paint, and you don’t even have to clean your gun.  It’s gonna get dark, so wear your sneakers and dress warmly.  Remember, loose layers absorb those paintballs better than a t-shirt will.  Of course, the saying is that “chicks dig scars,” so maybe you want to encourage the paintball welts.  Don’t wear white, though, or those WYPs will spot you from a mile away.

SUNNY SUNDAY HIKE
Friday, September 7th, 2007

The weekend looks to be fantastic. Join adventurous Skagit Young Professionals on an epic hike this Sunday, September 9. We’ll meet at the northeast corner of the Burlington Haggens parking lot (nearest to Krispy Kreme) at 9:00 AM and then head up to Cascade Pass, considered one of the top hikes in North Cascades National Park. The hike is described as relatively easy in difficulty and suitable for those who don’t hike a lot. The total distance should be about 7 miles. Bring a lunch, water, camera, hat or sunscreen, etc. No dogs allowed since it’s in the National Park. We should be able to graze on wild mountain blueberries and enjoy a beautiful day. On the way back we can stop at Cascadian Farms for organic icecream and possibly Annie’s Pizza in Concrete or the Birdsview Brewing Company for a well-earned dinner. Please RSVP to Dr. David Krohse from Northwest Chiropractic Clinic at 360-708-4626 or davidkrohse@yahoo.com. Hike description is here.

Good company, good eats…
Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

While you shouldn’t need a special reason to go out to dinner, it seems to be a requirement for many of us– and, consequently, we are inexperienced when it comes to restaurants in Skagit County.  Fear not, Dinner Club has begun, and it can be your new reason to eat out at least once a month with other fun folk!  On the last Tuesday of each month, SYPs will meet for dinner at a Skagit County restaurant to enjoy a meal and meet new people in an entirely social situation.  Everyone is invited, but space will always be limited… why?  Because the prospect of 50 of us taking over a restaurant for dinner is somewhat scary.  And besides, an intimate dinner group is the best way to make friends.

For the first meeting on August 28th, we shall venture to The Porterhouse at 416 W Gates Street in Mount Vernon at 7 pm.  We have space for 15 people, so email E.P. at ep@jwmurphylaw.com ASAP if you want to go!

 They have vegetarian entrees, too!
